Our story
aWondr. skincare represents innovative development of products that actually do something for your skin.
It originated from the idea of sustainably processing the available powers of nature in vegan care products and thereby using an active organism that is billions of years old, the single-celled green algae “Chlorella Vulgaris”.
This algae has an unprecedented amount of beneficial properties for the skin and is therefore incorporated in all our aWondr. products.
Our brand
aWondr. is part of the brand Beijerinck. This brand was set up to develop vegan products with natural algae. Our brand name is inspired by the Dutch microbiologist M.W. Beijerinck who identified the algae in 1890. The B of Beijerinck forms the core of our logo and if you look closely at the dot in aWondr. you will see our logo in miniature size.
Besides the beneficial effects on the skin, algae are associated with many health benefits, including lowered risk factors for heart disease and improved blood sugar management. Algae are gaining more and more popularity and could be the future sustainable superfood in a rapidly changing world.
Our products are developed in harmony with nature and we are convinced algae are a wonder of nature that should be shared with everyone. The brand name aWondr. is inspired by this philosophy, the “a” stands for algae and Wondr. for the wonderful benefits of algae.
Chlorella Vulgaris
The skin is our largest organ and protects us against harmful external influences. Free radicals are formed under the influence of UV radiation from the sun and pollution. These are harmful particles that can affect cells and are responsible for wrinkle formation and skin aging.
In our aWondr. products we have incorporated the active green algae, Chlorella Vulgaris. The uniqueness of Chlorella Vulgaris is that it produces large amounts of metabolites not found in other organisms. Metabolites can counteract the formation of free radicals responsible for skin aging. This has multiple positive effects on skin health including the reduction of wrinkles and fine lines. In addition, metabolites act as natural antioxidants. The natural antioxidants in aWondr. provide visibly smoother skin and improve the shade of the skin.
Decrease in collagen is also a major cause of skin aging. Collagen is a protein that ensures the elasticity of the skin. The exclusive of Chlorella Vulgaris in aWondr. is that it stimulates the formation of collagen.

The team gets bigger and releases their first product.
In his daily work, Willem came into contact with a company in Spain in 2019 that was setting up an algae production location and needed technical expertise for this.
Willem came into contact with cosmetics through the Spanish company and became a representative for the Benelux. The Spanish company did not get any further with their development, so we looked around at what was possible in the Netherlands in the field of algae cultivation and development.
Through them, a number of people came into the picture who were interested in helping Willem set up a cosmetic line based on algae.
This resulted in the establishment of Northgold Cosmetics on May 17, 2021.

We see that people consume unconsciously, while more and more people want to make conscious choices. aWondr. is therefore vegan and eco-friendly.
Our packaging is made of sustainable cardboard and we use a glass jar instead of the plastic variant. Glass is the most sustainable packaging because it can be recycled for 100%.
Did you know that our glass jars are UV resistant? In this way we ensure that the valuable ingredients are protected against external influences.
